Crystal Lake approves special use permit for cell tower

Councilmeeting2

The Crystal Lake City Council voted to approve a special use permit for a Verizon wireless tower at its Dec. 1 meeting.

The proposed communications tower owned by Verizon Wireless/Central States would be placed within city limits at 6521 Commercial Road.  Attorney Richard Riley presented information about the proposal, existing towers in the area and maps of coverage and how the tower would impact that coverage area.

Riley said the tower will be the “slick stick” design, however it has certain limitations to carriers. Compared to a monopole, the “slick stick’ can’t use certain equipment that causes issues with carriers. Riley said that the potential for additional towers is required due to the “slick sticks” limitations. Riley also presented photographs of the tower from the perspective of Three Oaks Recreation.

Riley said there was no opposition at the two public hearings regarding the tower.

The City Council voted to approve the special use permit for the "slick stick" tower.
