Cary considers sustainability group in village board session

Cary

During a recent partial Cary, Illinois Village Board session, members discussed the possibility of a sustainability task force for the village.

This discussion began as a recommendation to form a group at the board’s previous meeting that took place on Jan. 19.

With this recommendation came materials from other municipalities including Crystal Lake, the Village of Downers Grove and Aurora as examples of what these groups are tasked with.

The Sustainability Committee of Crystal Lake is tasked with determining measures that would allow the city to exist as sustainably and cost effectively as possible. This committee also hears presentations from different organizations and businesses regarding opportunities and proposals.

Aurora has a similar group that operates under its mayor. From the Village of Downers Grove, its Sustainability Best Practices from 2010 and its 2011 Action Plan was submitted as a sample plan for development. Included within its best practices were several areas including energy, water usage, transportation, community outreach and waste diversion.

During the meeting webcast, the board noted that having a group like this would be able to benefit the village by attracting grant possibilities. It was decided that an initial set of meetings would be set up that would consist of volunteers that work in areas that would be affected by sustainability measures.
