The Planning and Zoning Commission of McHenry voted Jan. 20 to recommend issuing a conditional use permit for an outdoor sales lot at a trailer and vehicle body shop.

A request for a special use permit that would allow the renting of large trailer vehicles, similar to those used by U-Haul, and related equipment accompanied the permit application. Both requests were submitted by American Customs Inc. located on Front Street.

The requests would facilitate the creation of a combined moving truck rental and repair facility specialized in motorcycle work. During the hearing, it was noted that a similar business occupied the space before it had relocated out of the city.

According to staff reports, this combination of facilities would be compatible with the surrounding area. The report also indicated that the number of trucks able to be rented should be limited to a maximum of 10. The meeting notes state that Don Stelling, representing the company, has worked with U-Haul for a significant amount of time.

Following deliberation, the motion was approved with stipulations that include that motorcycle repair and restoration should be indoors and that the company restripe parking spots that account for the surrounding units to be able to meet parking requirements.
