Woodstock Plan Commission backs duplex plan

The Woodstock Plan Commission backed a request to build a duplex on Northampton Street.

The Woodstock Plan Commission voted Feb. 25 to recommend a request be granted to allow a duplex to be built on Northampton Street.

This matter had first been discussed at a hearing Jan. 28 and was initially proposed as a three-unit residential structure by Hearthstone Communities and Woodstock Christian Life Services. Minutes from the earlier hearing indicate that Hearthstone Communities CEO Terry Egan said the company would change the proposal to a duplex structure.

Variances were also requested regarding the lot size and lot coverage. The proposed duplex would take up 33.7 percent of the available square feet, exceeding the 30 percent allowed by city code. This would be to account for one of the units in the duplex to offer three bedrooms and two bathrooms. The company states that many prospective residents prefer a three-bedroom unit rather than two.

The commission is recommending granting the request with the conditions that the demolition and cleanup will be carried out by the company within one year.
