McHenry city zoning panel backs proposed Riverwood School addition
The city of McHenry's Planning and Zoning Commission voted Feb. 17 to recommend the City Council approve a conditional-use request by McHenry Elementary School District 15 to add a building addition and other variances at Riverwood School.
District 15 Superintendent Alan Hoffman said the school wants to add new classroom space and an interior courtyard by eliminating two mobile classrooms located on the campus of Riverwood School. The minutes indicate that this is a part of a larger district plan to eliminate mobile classrooms in exchange for permanent building structures. The proposed building would take up 7,890 square feet.
City staff has issued a report that states that the proposed additions to the school property would not have significant negative impact on the surrounding area.
Hoffman also said the addition is not meant to facilitate enrollment growth. He said its primary goal will be to offer students that are currently enrolled a better learning environment. He also said that there are approximately 750 students at the school.
