Allen Skillicorn, the Republican candidate in Illinois House District 66, blasted state Auditor General Frank Mautino last week after 30 Illinois lawmakers filed House Joint Resolution (HJR) 158, a resolution intended to remove Mautino from office, after Mautino refused to answer legislators' questions, take an unpaid leave of absence or step down from office.

Mautino was appointed auditor general in October. After taking office, state and federal investigators began looking into campaign spending irregularities that occurred during Mautino's tenure as a state representative.

"Instead of overseeing and preventing waste and fraud, Auditor General Frank Mautino is neck deep in his own fraud case," Skillicorn said. "For too long the blind have led the blind in Illinois and look where we are at. I urge the general assembly to remove Frank Mautino from the office of Illinois auditor general without delay. How can we trust this man who is under federal investigation for misusing campaign funds."

Mautino allegedly spent more than $200,000 for gasoline and auto repairs on his campaign vehicle over the past 10 years at a service station owned by a Spring Valley alderman. In addition, since 1999, Mautino made $259,000 in payments to a local bank. When questioned about these expenditures, Mautino stood on his Fifth Amendment rights and hired attorneys rather than respond to inquiries regarding irregularities in his campaign fund spending.
