For the 24th year in a row, students from Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences’ College of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery (CPMS) achieved a 100% residency placement rate on national Match Day. This ongoing record underscores DMU’s position as a leading podiatric medical school and highlights the preparation of the CPMS Class of 2026.

Hiba Bangash, from Crystal Lake, Illinois, was among the 48 Doctor of Podiatric Medicine students who matched for residency. Bangash will begin her podiatric medicine and surgery residency at Humboldt Park Health in Chicago after graduating in May.

Match Day is an annual event where medical students across the country learn where they will complete their residency training.

“Having a 100% match rate over the past 24 years, which included some years in which there were more graduates than residency positions, is one of our most important outcomes because it demonstrates sustained success,” says Kevin Smith, DPM’95, PhD, FACFAS, DMU CPMS dean. “Having a perfect match rate that spans over two decades is a sign that our students, faculty, staff and alumni are deeply committed to creating a culture of excellence.”

This year marked the first time CPMS joined DMU’s in-person Match Day event on March 20 at the university campus. Students, faculty and families gathered to celebrate as envelopes were opened at 11 a.m., revealing each student’s residency assignment.

The Class of 2026 matched into podiatric residency programs nationwide. The top states for placements were Michigan with eight matches, Pennsylvania with five and Texas with four.

DMU’s CPMS continues to be recognized for high board scores, strong residency placement rates and graduation rates.

Des Moines University Medicine and Health Sciences is located in West Des Moines and offers eleven graduate-level professional degree programs across various health disciplines. Founded in 1898, DMU reports student scores on national exams and match rates for residencies that are consistently above national averages.
