Illinois officials report 4,923 coronavirus deaths, with 113,195 confirmed cases

There have been 113,195 confirmed coronavirus cases in Illinois as of May 26, with 4,923 deaths linked to the virus, according to data from the state Department of Public Health (IDPH).

Chicago (43,372 cases) and Cook County (30,447 cases) posted the highest numbers statewide. Chicago’s death toll from the virus stands at 1,980, while Cook County recorded 1,374 deaths, according to the IDPH.

Illinois residents who have been tested for COVID-19 now number 786,794, the department reported. And the age group with the most confirmed cases was 40 to 49, with 20,446 people in the age group testing positive for the virus.

Among all those testing positive in Illinois, 53,727 were male and 57,088 were female, the IDPH said. Male deaths linked to coronavirus numbered 2,734, while female deaths stood at 2,182.

Broken down according to race, the fatalities consisted of 2,095 Hispanics, 239 Asians, 2,095 whites, 1,486 African-Americans, and 163 belonging to other races or who did not provide their ethnicity before they died.
