The Johnsburg Village Board approved placing a sales tax referendum proposal on the March ballot and voted to support the #mchenrycountygives campaign at its Nov. 17 meeting.
Village Trustee Kyle Frost introduced the motion to place the proposed sales tax question on the March 15 primary ballot.
The form of the referendum proposal was questioned by Trustee Kevin McEvoy, but Village Attorney Michael Smoron ensured the board that its language was consistent with statute requirements.
Trustee John Huemann asked if items such as boats and cars would be exempt from the sales tax. Smoron said the proposed ordinance would allow the village to put in place tax increases, but doesn’t allow the village to put in place tax exemptions. The trustees then voted to approve placing the proposed sale tax question on the ballot.
The motion to support nonprofit organizations through the #mchenrycountygives campaign was approved after Marilou Niggemann asked for the board’s support, saying that McHenry, Crystal Lake, Richmond, Spring Grove and Woodstock have all committed to the campaign.
