The Crystal Lake Planning and Zoning Commission voted Dec. 2 to approve issuing a special permit to allow Garfield’s Beverage Warehouse to conduct alcohol tastings on its premises.

The commission issued conditions that the store, located at 320 Virginia St., must implement in order for the permit. Those conditions include the installation of a wooden fence at least six feet tall along the northeastern portion and that a cornice element be installed with staff assistance. The store must also ensure that the standing room and drinking area does not impede the path toward exits. Reviews will also be carried out by the Community Development, Police, Fire and Public Works departments and the establishment will be required to address these recommendations.

Adam Silverstein and David Garfield, who represented the store, said patrons that have samples will be allowed to walk around the store so that staff may recommend other products. Patrons will not be allowed to carry any samples outside of the store. This location is part of a move by the company into a larger space. With this move, the facility will be able to support a bar area where samples will be served. According to Silverstein, allowing the tasting of new products is often carried out in this fashion at similar retail stores.
