When the McHenry County state’s attorney and sheriff recently endorsed GOP candidate Paul Serwatka in his bid for the presidency of the Village of Lakewood, the candidate expressed pride and gratitude.

Patrick Kenneally, McHenry County state’s attorney, officially made the announcement on March 10, which was published on McHenry County's official blog. Kenneally praised the candidate’s “tireless activism toward good government” and complimented his candor.

“Paul has a very straight forward, sincere and honest approach, whether dealing with elected officials or the residents he serves,” Kenneally said. "Watching him work in recent years, it’s easy to see he is passionate about his efforts in bettering local government... I have no doubt the people of Lakewood will be well served with Paul as their next village president.”

Serwatka responded by not only expressing how much Kenneally’s support meant to him, but also quickly clarifying that his appreciation was “because of what he stands for and the kind of person he is.”

"I have listened to him speak, read of his work since taking office and even watched his interactions with citizens,” Serwatka said. “He is humble, down to earth [and] very sincere about serving — and when he speaks of justice, he speaks not just of convictions, but of fairness."

Kenneally’s announcement followed a key endorsement from Bill Prim, McHenry County sheriff, two days earlier.

"Paul has been very instrumental in bringing about better, more honest government throughout McHenry County," Prim said. “I’ve watched Paul’s efforts as a Lakewood trustee, and he has proven to be a true champion for bringing about real transparency and accountability in Lakewood.”

Prim said Serwatka’s “work toward better government in this county has come at a great sacrifice of time, family and personal treasure… We are lucky to have citizens that committed, which is why I am proud to endorse Paul Serwatka to be the next president for the Village of Lakewood.”

Serwatka was also grateful to learn of the sheriff’s support, saying that he was “humbled by the sheriff’s words and extremely proud.”

Serwatka lauded Prim’s work.

“The sheriff has brought about quite a transformation within the sheriff’s office himself, in reigning in spending, improving morale among the deputies and, most importantly, in making McHenry County a safer and better place for all of us to live and raise our families,” Serwatka said.

Serwatka needs to score more votes than one write-in candidate in the April 4 election to become Lakewood’s president.
