Crystal Lake FD responds to 52 fires in 2016

Crystal Lake Fire Department responded to 834 calls in 2016, according to data from the National Fire Incident Reporting System obtained by the McHenry Times.

The calls in Crystal Lake included 52 fires - 19 structure fires, nine vehicle fires and 21 other fires. The fire department also responded to three calls for ruptures, explosions or overheating.

In all, the department saw $504,796 in fire loss - or about $9,708 per fire.

The department also received 782 false calls, including four malicious calls and 778 other false calls.

Two fire service members were injured in fire-related incidents.

The Crystal Lake Firefighters' Pension Fund, which has 62 active employees and 29 retired or inactive employees, was $912,632 in debt as of April 2016, according to the fund's mandated filings with the Illinois Department of Insurance. That amounts to $17,551 for every fire in 2016.
