McHenry County collecting 'dead' household batteries for recycling

Batteries

The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is offering a free recycling program for single-use household batteries in AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt sizes through Jan. 31.

MCDH said in a release that residents can drop off their single-use batteries between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at MCDH Building A at 2200 N. Seminary Ave. in Woodstock through Jan 31. The MCDH will send the batteries to Battery Solutions, which will chemically separate the batteries into their components, like zinc and manganese concentrate, steel and plastic.

“Before pitching those spent batteries into the trash, stop … think … and recycle them at MCDH!” MCDH Solid Waste Manager Kristy Hecke said. “Recycling is an easy way to reduce waste from disposal in sanitary landfills, improve sustainability efforts and protect the environment.”
