McHENRY COUNTY: Monitoring Fox River Levels

Flood 1000

McHenry County issued the following announcement on May 17.

Even though only minor flooding is expected along the Fox River at this time, McHenry County is watching water levels and is advising residents along the river to have a flood plan in place.

Minor flooding is expected along the Fox River over the next several days, courtesy of recent heavy rains. The Fox River at the Algonquin Tailwater is expected to crest Saturday at about six inches above flood stage.

“After last year’s historic Fox River flooding, we want residents and businesses to know that county government and the McHenry County Emergency Management Agency are watching the situation. We’re prepared to act to protect lives and property, and to call for aid from state and federal authorities if need be,” County Board Chairman Jack Franks, D-Marengo, said.

Emergency Management Agency Director David Christensen said that people living along the river should not be alarmed, but should always take flooding season seriously and be prepared to take flood control measures sooner rather than later, especially if the Fox River in Wisconsin is in moderate to major flooding.

“If people are going to protect their property, protect early. If you live along the river, you should always be prepared, and have a go-bag ready if you have to leave,” Christensen said.
