McHENRY COUNTY: Health Department receives WISEWOMAN grant

Grant

McHenry County issued the following announcement on June 3.

McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) has been awarded funding to evaluate income-qualified women for cardiovascular and other chronic disease risk factors. A grant from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) allows the Health Department to assess risk factors and link at-risk women to health coaching and services that can help a client to reduce those risks through improved diet, physical activity and tobacco cessation.

The WISEWOMAN award, standing for Well-Integrated Screening and Evaluation for Women Across the Nation, provides funds for the Health Department to add cardiovascular and chronic disease risk assessment services to those currently offered by the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IBCCP). In a 2017 McHenry County Healthy Community Study, heart disease was found to be the second leading cause of death and stroke was fifth. “It’s gratifying that now when clients come to us for a breast and cervical exam, we can also offer them screening and support for other chronic diseases that greatly affect women’s health.” Says Jennifer Northern, R.N., IBCCP Program Director at MCDH.

Women who are uninsured, under-insured or unable to pay high deductibles may be eligible for IBCCP and WISEWOMAN health services. For more information or to make an appointment call the Health Department at 815-334-0232 or visit our website at www.mcdh.info.
