McHENRY COUNTY: Christmas Tree and Christmas Light Recycling

Recycle

McHenry County issued the following announcement on Dec. 31.

Information and locations for recycling Christmas Trees and Christmas Lights can be on the McHenry County Health Department webpage www.mcdh.info (Environmental Health, Solid Wastes).

The most important thing to remember when recycling a Christmas tree is that it needs to be in its original condition. Remove all the lights, ornaments, tinsel, garland, the tree stand, and please do not put it in a plastic bag.

If you use a plastic bag to remove the tree from your house, remove the plastic bag once you are outside. Most municipal solid waste haulers pick up Christmas trees in December and January.

Check with your waste hauler for specifics on dates and requirements, some of these tree maybe recycled and some may be landfilled.

Christmas lights and other stringed lights can be recycled too. Recycling locations can also be found on the McHenry County Health Department webpage. Many of facilities listed will take “Christmas” type lights year round. DD
