McHenry County Sheriff Bill Prim said his office won't be enforcing Gov. J.B. Pritzker's extended stay-at-home orders.
Prim said his office doesn't have the manpower to arrest business owners who choose to reopen, according to NBC Chicago. Additionally, the order won't be enforced as a criminal offense.
“We do not have the capacity or desire to enforce the governor’s orders,” Prim said on social media. “The sheriff’s office does encourage residents to self-monitor and voluntarily comply with the orders.”
Other county sheriffs in the area and around Illinois have said they will not be enforcing the stay-at-home order either, according to NBC Chicago.
In Kankakee County, the Sheriff's Department said it would not enforce a mandate for people to wear face masks in public.
“We have enough liability issues to worry about on a daily basis that this would just exacerbate the problem and I just don’t see it being legitimate,” Mike Downey, Kankakee County Sheriff, told the Center Square.
