State Senator Craig Wilcox (R-McHenry) has announced the launch of his third annual “My Inspirational Teacher” Essay Contest, coinciding with Illinois’ Teacher Appreciation Week in May. The contest is open to students in grades 6 through 8 who live within the 32nd Senate District.

Students are invited to write essays between 250 and 500 words about a teacher who has inspired them during their education. Entries should focus on specific actions taken by teachers that made a positive impact, as well as the outcomes of those influences on the student’s school experience. Each essay must include information about both the student and teacher, including names, schools, grade levels, and subjects taught.

“Teachers shape lives in ways that often extend far beyond the classroom,” said Wilcox. “This contest gives students a meaningful opportunity to pause, reflect, and recognize the educators who have encouraged them, challenged them, and helped them grow. I’m always inspired by the heartfelt stories students share, and I look forward to reading this year’s essays.”

A panel of education leaders will evaluate submissions based on persuasiveness, spelling and grammar accuracy, and adherence to instructions. Winning essays will be recognized in several categories; excerpts from all winning entries will be displayed for one week in the State Capitol rotunda in Springfield. The grand prize-winning essay will also be posted online at SenatorWilcox.com.

“Teachers are often the steady influence and positive role models young people need,” added Wilcox. “They go above and beyond their lesson plans, serving as mentors, encouragers, and trusted supporters. This contest is a small but important way to publicly celebrate their dedication and thank them for the lasting impact they make every day.”

The entry deadline for submissions is April 24, 2026; winners will be notified by email. Eligible students must reside in or attend school within communities served by the 32nd Senate District—including Antioch, Bull Valley, Cary, Crystal Lake, Fox Lake, Island Lake, Johnsburg, Lake Villa, Lakemoor, Lakewood, Lindenhurst, McCullom Lake, McHenry (which Wilcox represents), Oakwood Hills, Port Barrington, Prairie Grove, Richmond, Ringwood,Round Lake Beach, Spring Grove,Trout Valley, Volo,Woodstock, and Wonder Lake.

Wilcox was elected as a Republican senator representing Illinois’ 32nd Senate District in 2018 after succeeding Pamela Althoff.
