President Obama signed a bill into law late last week, co-sponsored by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14), that adjusts certain provisions of the Affordable Care Act to favor mid-size businesses.

The Protecting Affordable Coverage for Employees (PACE) Act keeps the threshold for “small group” companies to 50 employees or less, instead of forcing businesses with 51-100 employees into the small-group market in 2016.

This would have triggered new coverage requirements and administrative burdens for mid-market companies, Hultgren said.

The adjusted law also permits states to define for themselves what constitutes a small employer.

“We need to continue to give states the flexibility to do what’s best for the people who live there and offer employers more certainty and better tools to most effectively run their businesses. This is a win for the state of Illinois, for small and mid-market companies in the 14th Congressional District and the thousands of people they employ.”

Hultgren has proposed another bill, H.R. 3352, which if passed, would allow states such as Illinois to develop their own health care markets independent of the federal system created through the Affordable Care Act.
