McHenry's recreation center enters first development stage.
After a summer of construction, the City of McHenry Recreation Center has reached what it calls phase one of development.
The 18,200-square-foot building will function as the core of a recreational campus that will also include a gymnasium and a pool. The project's master plan has designed the campus to include the Peter J. Merkel Aquatic Center, McHenry Skate Park and Knox Park. When finished, the center will serve as the main venue for parks and recreation classes, which are currently held at multiple venues throughout the city.
McHenry put aside half of all park developer donations for the past 16 years to fund the project.
Project officials expect the recreation center to open in spring 2016.
