The federal government's Helsinki Commission will hold a hearing on Tuesday in Washington D.C., aimed at formulating a response to the ongoing migrant crisis in Europe.
Officials from the U.S. State Department, United Nations, and ambassadors from the European Union and Serbia are expected to testify. U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-Dist. 14) is one of nine commissioners who will receive testimony. Several other House members and some U.S. senators will be present, as will one member each from the State, Defense and Commerce Departments.
At least 283,000 people from more than nine Middle Eastern countries have entered Europe by land or sea since 2014, a report released in April by Frontex, the European Union's border security agency, said. More than a quarter of those arrivals came from Syria, whose civil war has been raging for nearly five years.
