The Woodstock Cultural and Social Awareness Commission introduced a new member and announced meeting dates for 2016 at its Oct. 5 meeting.
The commission met for the first time in 2016 on Monday; its next meetings are scheduled for April 4, July 11 and Oct. 3.
William Donato, a teacher at Woodstock High School, became the newest member of the commission. He teaches environmental science, biology and forensics courses.
The commission also discussed the closure of the Rock Valley College’s New Americans’ Initiative. After being told the program was eliminated due to a lack of funding, the commission decided it would develop a similar program.
The commission also discussed a request by Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager to develop a bagless community and to develop measures to avoid the use of plastic bags in retail and grocery stores. Sager said he would not be opposed to prohibiting the use of plastic bags by certain retailers. The commission said such a measure would not be implemented for at least a year and that public awareness would be needed if the reduction of plastic bag use were to occur in the city.
The commission also was told about a program to address teenagers running away from their homes through the Pioneer Center and the McHenry County Health Department.
