The Woodstock Cultural and Social Awareness Commission and the Environmental Commission will meet in a joint session at 6 p.m. Thursday in City Hall to discuss a proposed measure aimed at reducing the use of plastic shopping bags in the city.
Members of the commissions will be continuing a discussion from their Dec. 10 meeting on shopping-bag saving initiatives. Information on “bring your own bag” (BYOBag) programs from the Environmental Defenders will be available. According to the agenda, samples for proclamations and a draft proclamation also will be discussed.
Woodstock Mayor Brian Sager has made requests to establish the city as a bagless community and has said he would consider legislation that would prohibit the use of plastic bags by certain retailers.
According to meeting notes from Oct. 5, the Cultural and Social Awareness Commission said public outreach and support would be necessary in order to create an effective bagless initiative.
