When he isn't campaigning to represent District 66 in the state House or serving as a trustee for East Dundee, Allen Skillicorn is racing cars as a two-time National Auto Sport Association champion while also helping to find families for homeless pets.
Skillicorn recently competed in the Ultimate Track Car Challenge in Rescue Pet Motorsports' Corvette C6R, boasting more than 700hp and exceeding speeds of 165 mph at the 3.27-mile-long Virginia International Raceway in Danville.
"Rescue Pet Motorsports and Team Skillicorn are committed to being competitive and are proud to be one of the fastest cars on the track, scoring a 9th place finish in our first visit to this event and track," Skillicorn said after the race.
Auto racing is how Rescue Pet Motorsports gets the word out about Petfinder.com, and all the nation's many pet rescue and shelter organizations.
Although mechanical glitches and tire issues limited his time on the track, Skillicorn remained undeterred.
"Next year we are coming back and aiming for the top step of the podium," he said. "We also want to remind people that thousands of pets are dropped off at shelters across the country every day. Because there is such an overabundance of pets, I always remind people 'Never shop, always adopt!'"
