Marian Central Catholic High School has hired Jim Sarther as its new boys basketball head coach and Kevin Smith as boys golf head coach.
Sarther played tennis and football at Hinsdale Central, and currently teaches business, computers and accounting classes at Marian Central. He came to Marian Central in 2007 and has coached every level of boys basketball since then. He also was the head coach for boys tennis for three of those years. He takes over for Curtis Price, who recently stepped from the assistant athletic director position into the head job.
Sarther takes over a program that will seek to replace Adam Pischke, who is moving on to NCAA Division II Lewis University. The team will look to rely on size, with 6-foot-8 Sam Olrich and 6-4 Jack Moscinski returning. The two averaged 11.9 points and 10.1 points a game last season, respectively.
Smith has been an assistant girls golf coach at Marian Central for the past five years. His love of golf started at 12 years old when his father got him a caddying job at Knollwood Club in Lake Forest. Smith, who considers himself "semi-retired," was a firefighter-paramedic and worked at the Lake County Coroner's Office.
