Voters in both McHenry and Kane counties cast ballots to replace the retiring Mike Tryon on Tuesday and once the votes were counted, Republican Allen Skillicorn emerged the clear victor in a run against Democratic candidate Nancy Zettler.
Endorsed by Tyron for his support of term limits, lowered taxes, increased services and reinvestment in infrastructure in East Dundee, Skillicorn has a history of fighting for constituents in the 66th District.
“As state Rep. Mike Tryon is well aware, there has been a parade of bad legislation emanating from the state House under Speaker Mike Madigan’s (D-Chicago) tenure,” Skillicorn recently told McHenry Times. “Bills to hike our taxes, diminish our schools, and peel away our rights as citizens.”
With 57.8 percent of the vote, Skillicorn’s win was a decisive one and he is happy so many supported his vision.
“Such a decisive victory indicates that voters in Illinois need relief from high property taxes and archaic regulatory policies that limit growth and jobs,” Skillicorn said. “It’s clear we must pass Gov. (Bruce) Rauner’s property tax freeze and his cost-cutting measures without delay to turn around the state’s sluggish economy.”
Just after 10 p.m. Tuesday, Zettler and Skillicorn exchanged pleasantries after the election.
“I thank Nancy Zettler for the spirited campaign and bringing up many issues that are near and dear to my heart,” Skillicorn said. “I look forward to working together with Nancy to rein in abuses in Tax-Increment-Financing, regain the trust of her supporters and correct many of the inequities of Illinois’ status-quo power structure.”
Skillicorn ran on a platform of being a conservative reformer, in which he has experience as a village trustee in East Dundee who successfully helped keep the property tax levy frozen for five years and promoted local economic growth.
“I was elected to represent all the people in the 66th District and I plan on doing just that by moving the ball forward to help working class families, seniors and the great people of Algonquin, Carpentersville, Crystal Lake, East Dundee, Elgin, Huntley, Lake in the Hills, Lakewood, Sleepy Hollow, and West Dundee.” Skillicorn said.
“My opponent ran a very competitive campaign, but our message of property tax relief and standing up to Speaker Madigan resonated with the voters of McHenry and Kane counties,” Skillicorn said.
Skillicorn’s “Fire Madigan” campaign has been consistent, and he plans on keeping that pledge all the way to Springfield now that he is elected.
“Once we have cleaned up all the signs and campaign litter, I will take the fight to Speaker Madigan, who has been crushing our economy and our home values for the past 40 years,” he said.
