Community High School District 155 Board members in Crystal Lake tentatively approved a tax levy increase despite the objections of Rep. Allen Skillicorn (R-East Dundee) and others at a recent meeting, according to a press release.
At the meeting, Skillicorn asked the seven-member board to vote against the 4.45 percent, or $3.2 million, property tax increase and asked them to instead cut taxes by 10 percent. District 155 has not increased taxes for the past three years.
“Homeowners in Illinois pay some of the highest property taxes in the nation, and they can ill-afford yet another burden on top of the income tax hike they were hit with in July,” Skillicorn said in a press release before the meeting.

The owner of a $200,000 house will pay $1,925 under increase, the district said. Board members voted 5-2 in favor of the hike, with a final vote scheduled for November, the Northwest Herald reported.
The tax levy amounts to 74 percent of the school district’s total revenue. The tax levy is needed to help with the maintenance of school buildings and grounds over the next 10 years, which will need approximately $50 million in work done, according to the district.
