Algonquin Township may have broken law by selling street sweeper, watchdog group says

A watchdog group is raising questions about the sale of machinery previously owned by Algonquin Township and whether the sale broke the law.

Kirk Allen of the Edgar County Watchdogs reported on the group's site that Bob Miller, previously the Algonquin Township highway commissioner as well as the Township Officials of Illinois president, made a sale last year of a 2012 Elgin Crosswind sweeper to the village of Island Lake for $70,000 without action by electors. State law says elector approval is needed when it comes to selling equipment or machinery by a road district.

The sweeper, which had about 25,000 miles on its engine, has a value of $246,000 new.

Also, the sweeper was not declared as surplus, a status that would have allowed for it to be sold the way it was.

“All indications appear to point to the road district selling equipment in direct violation of the law,” Allen wrote.
