Don DeWitte, the former St. Charles Mayor, has been chosen for the 33rd District state Senate seat.
Sen. Karen McConnaughay (R-St. Charles) is vacating the seat early, allowing DeWitte to take it over.
DeWitte was one of seven candidates considered for the seat. His experience as a city councilman and former mayor, and his work with the Regional Transportation Authority board stood out during the selection process, according to a Daily Herald report.

Several municipal leaders suggested that DeWitte try to win the seat, the report said, as did some current and former legislators.
Kane County Republican Chairman Ken Shepro said DeWitte was the obvious choice. His confirmation was unanimous.
DeWitte said he plans to continue working on projects that McConnaughay began, such as school funding and fighting human trafficking. He will also focus on repairing the state’s financial situation.
McConnaughay is expected to make an official announcement soon about when she will vacate the seat.
