McHenry County issued the following announcement on Nov. 1.
Bring your single use non-rechargeable batteries (sizes AA, AAA, C, D and 9-volt) to the battery recycling exhibit during the Green Living Expo at McHenry County College on Saturday, November 3rd between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. The McHenry County Department of Health (MCDH) is collecting and recycling single-use non-rechargeable batteries from residential sources at no cost.
Many toys, portable power tools and devices operated today rely on battery power. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) statistics tell us that Americans throw away more than three billion batteries each year. That's about 180,000 tons. More than 86,000 tons are single use non-rechargeable alkaline batteries. Recycling non-rechargeable batteries is an easy way of reducing waste from disposal in sanitary landfills, while also improving sustainability efforts and protecting the environment.
Batteries collected will be shipped to Battery Solutions, a United States-based battery recycler where the batteries are separated by chemistry and recycled into products that use zinc and manganese concentrate, steel, paper and plastic.
