Crystal Lake Community Consolidated School District 47 recently issued the following announcement.
On Tuesday, February 19, Crystal Lake Elementary District 47 will launch its third annual 2019 Parent Leadership Academy. A four-month-long program, the academy is geared to native Spanish-speaking parents whose child(ren) attend a District 47 Title I school. Funded by the federal Title I program, the academy is designed to educate, connect and guide parents to resources to ultimately help them become leaders in their schools and community.
Approximately 20 parents across all four D47 Title I schools have registered for this year’s leadership academy. The program consists of five 2.5-hour workshops made up of three main components:
- Education: Participants will learn about various topics, from technology use and communication to navigating the school system and learning about community organizations.
- Presentation: At each session, participants will hear from a local community leader, who will share how their organization supports District 47 families. Guest speakers include Rafael Arellano, McHenry County business owner and local motivational speaker who is also a former ESL student and college athlete; a representative from Mano a Mano community center; an officer from the Crystal Lake Police Department; and representatives from the Crystal Lake Public Library, Park District and the Sage YMCA.
- Assignment/homework: In between meetings, participants will be charged with doing an activity, taking a field trip or completing an assignment related to the previous month’s topic.
“We are so excited to be connecting our D47 families with community resources that will support and encourage their involvement in Crystal Lake,” said Marilyn Massart, who is leading the academy as District 47’s bilingual parent liaison. “There are so many opportunities among our partners and making those connections between them and our parents is a positive step towards their leadership in our community.”
