Huntley Community School District 158 issued the following announcement on March 24.
The leaders of the Huntley Walmart awarded LIGHT Services a $1,500 Local Community Grant for students in transition to use for recreational programming. With this grant, students were able to participate in community outings in the early spring, at no additional cost to families. Highlighted trips included visits to Urban Air, Muse Art, a Chicago Wolves game, as well as a planned multi-district transition trip to Enchanted Castle in May.
At Urban Air, students challenged their minds and bodies, working on different team-building activities while cheering each other on. Students created individualized wooden art pieces at Muse Art Studio where their creativity was celebrated. Most recently, students attended a Chicago Wolves program called “Get Schooled by Skates.” Students enjoyed this interactive activity and benefited from embedded skills including self-advocacy, following directions, and having a positive attitude.
In May, the LIGHT students will participate in a year-end celebration with hundreds of other transition students from districts all over Illinois. This culminating event will allow students to meet new friends and old while building memories that will last a lifetime.
Looking ahead, Walmart has already graciously awarded the program with a $1,000 grant for the 2020-2021 school year. The LIGHT team is already working hard to plan educational and recreational activities and want to show their appreciation to Walmart for continuing to support our transition-aged students in leading independent, purposeful, fun-filled lives!
