McHenry County property owners who have encountered financial struggles with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and economic shutdown could be in store for a measure of relief from the county board.
The board has scheduled a virtual meeting with a line item to discuss and possibly approve waiving property tax late fees, the Northwest Herald reported.
The board will review and vote on a 90-day waiver of late fees and accompanying interest on the first installment of property tax bills.
Board Chairman Jack Franks told the Herald convening a board remotely is unprecedented, but acknowledged these are unprecedented times. The measure of relief is also expected to benefit small business owners who have suffered during the state's economic shutdown. Franks said it was important to hold the meeting with transparency without placing people’s health at risk.
The board will practice social distancing in its virtual meeting, which is available online the county website.
