State Rep. Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva) says the new police reform bill is worrisome and he wants Gov. J.B. Pritzker to veto it.
“Achieving criminal justice reform and ensuring the best public safety for all Illinoisans is essential,” Ugaste said in a statement. “While I agree with portions of this legislation, there are some extremely concerning aspects as well.”
Ugaste said he wants Pritzker to veto the bill immediately.
“Furthermore, another problem, as I understand it, is that the Governor cannot issue an amendatory veto on this bill, he can either sign it as is or veto it. Considering those options, I have to urge him to veto this bill.”
Ugaste called on Pritzker to reject the bill and allow interested legislators to draft a new one.
"I ask the Governor to veto this bill and ask the members who advanced this bill to immediately sit down with myself and other interested legislators and parties to work in a collaborative effort to achieve the goals of this bill.”
House Bill 3653 was approved by the Senate in a 32 to 23 vote. The legislation will go to the House for final considerations.
