In light of recent comments that were made by Illinois House Speaker Chris Welch, Rep. Dan Ugaste, a Republican from Geneva, is making it clear where he stands on the issue of a graduated income tax. Another tax hike is something that House Democrats have been floating for a while. In response, House Republicans have filed House Resolution 135, which is a resolution that makes their opposition to this measure clear.
As of now, every member of the House Republican caucus has signed onto the resolution, saying that they support Illinois families and businesses by opposing the tax hike. Dan Ugaste stands among those Republicans.
In a statement, Ugaste said, “It’s no secret that we have serious budget issues in Illinois, but we just can’t keep taxing our residents to cover up what has been decades of overspending and mismanagement. We should be more focused on reopening our state and promoting post-pandemic economic growth to increase our revenue picture, not pushing a second attempt at a failed tax proposal.”
The graduated income tax measure faces staunch opposition not only from House Republicans, but from the electorate, as well. Over 3 million Illinois voters opposed the graduated income tax when it was placed on the ballot last fall. House Democrats will have a real challenge passing the measure with any kind of significant or majority support.
