Crystal Lake Community Consolidated School District 47 recently issued the following announcement.
Six Lundahl eighth graders were recognized at the March 15th board meeting for being named 2021 Everyday Heroes by the Northwest Herald. They are the youngest recipients to date of this award, which honors individuals making a difference in their communities through everyday actions. The students are board members of Lundahl Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and include Cora Allie, Fayth Evenson, Grace Haase, Kushi Jadeja, Makenzy Lennon-Perone, and Ellie Reall.
During the 2020-21 school year, these students have spread kindness in this year of the pandemic organizing various community service activities, such as bell ringing, raising more than $400 for the Salvation Army; creating cards for residents of Sunrise Senior Living in Crystal Lake; organizing a food drive that donated more than 1,600 pounds of food to the Crystal Lake Food Pantry; and creating and delivering goody baskets for Crystal Lake first responders. The group has worked closely several days a week planning, coordinating and executing student-led initiatives in a safe and healthy manner to adhere to COVID guidelines, using virtual platforms for meetings, drop boxes, and other creative ways to organize and promote their activities.
“This incredibly selfless, big-hearted team of students banned together this year to lead large groups of students to help in many ways throughout their community,” said sixth grade language arts and social studies teacher Kim Chudik, who also oversees NJHS. “We are incredibly fortunate to have these future leaders as part of our Lundahl team, which we like to call our ‘dream team.’ They truly do make the world a better place.”
Other Lundahl faculty members who also serve as NJHS coordinators are Sandy Bigos, instructional coach/kindergarten teacher (2020-21); Rachel Smith, seventh grade language arts and social studies teacher; and Susie Johannesen, PE/health teacher.
The six Lundahl students and other 2021 Everyday Heroes will be featured and honored in a special print and online section of the Northwest Herald published in late March.
