A bill that would limit the number of years ranking majority and minority leaders can hold in the Illinois Legislature is headed to the full House for a vote.
House Bill 642 recently passed the House Executive Committee with unanimous support.
"Illinois is in desperate need of ethics reform," State Rep. Tom Weber (R-Lake Villa) wrote in an April 15 post on his Facebook page. "We have a lot to do, but putting term limits on legislative leadership positions to prevent the rise of another Mike Madigan is a start."
The Illinois House of Representatives passed "new" rules earlier this year that allows for the chamber to "govern itself," but some lawmakers felt the only difference to rules under Madigan's tenure as speaker were that these included term limits for leadership positions in the House.
Weber, a sponsor of House Bill 642, stressed a need for "statutory language" in a release on his website because the rules could be changed back in two years when the new General Assembly votes on its rules.
House Bill 642 would put a 10-year term limit on majority and minority leadership positions in both the House and Senate.
If passed, the limits would start in January 2023.
