Rep. Dan McConchie (R-Lake Zurich) was one of the many lawmakers, police and community members May 6 who attended the annual memorial service to honor fallen law enforcement officers.
Under the presence of an honor guard, the public service at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield recognized the officers who died in the line of duty in 2019 and 2020. At an early ceremony April 25, the names of the officers were read and engraved on the memorial.
“This is a way for us to memorialize their sacrifices for all of us and to make sure we continue to remember their legacy and remember the fact that we need to defend our police officers every day because they’re out there defending us,” McConchie said in a video posted to YouTube. “It’s really important for us to honor our fallen police officers who put themselves on the line every day.”
Also on May 6, state Rep. Dan Caulkins (R-Decatur) paid tribute to the list of 16 officers that included correctional officers and deputies in a House floor speech.
"These men and women were enshrined today on the Illinois State Police Officers' Memorial," he said. "I ask for a moment of silence to recognize their sacrifice and protecting all of us."
