Blast from the Past - Anton Meyer

Anton and Hilda were the parade
Grand Marshals in 1981

Anton Meyer was born September 17, 1902, the son of Fred and Helena May Meyer (discussed last week). He was married to Hilda May in Spring Grove in 1924. Anton soon took over the family farm at 7302 Meyer Road in 1925 and was a dairy, grain and chicken farmer for over 42 years. He maintained a dairy herd of 45 Guernsey cows, Duroc hogs, and a family flock of 350 leghorn hens. The cows were milked to the "strains of radio music" twice a day and produced such an "enticing kind of milk", that visitor's came daily to the Meyer milk house which was attached to the dairy barn. They would place their money on top of a heater in the milk house, and siphon off unpasteurized (but carefully refrigerated) milk into their own milk bottles. Some traveled all the way from Mundelein. This could only be done in the morning as the milk was picked up each day at noon by the milk distributor.

In 1968, Anton decided to give up farming. At noon on Tuesday, March 21, his milk cows, dairy equipment, tractors and other farm machinery, 180 bales of straw, ten tons of ear corn and much more went up for auction.

He and Hilda moved to a home they built on Park Lane just outside of Spring Grove and they enjoyed life together for another 17 years. In 1981 they were honored as the longest married couple and appointed Grand Marshals for the 4th of July parade.

They had four daughters and two sons, one of which preceded them in death in 1939. Six-year-old LeRoy had died of a ruptured appendix.

Anton was not only a farmer, but also was a trustee for the Fire Protection District for over 30 years, served as auditor for Burton Township, was a member of the Board of Elections and was a charter member of the Richmond Pioneer Club for senior citizens. He died in 1984 at the age of 82. Hilda lived until 1997. They are buried in St. Peter's Cemetery with their son, Leroy.
