Sen. Craig Wilcox (R-McHenry) is drawing attention to both World Cancer Day and Go Red For Women's Health Day.
"Today is World Cancer Day, and it's also Go Red for Women's Health Day," Wilcox posted to Facebook. "Take a moment and say a quick prayer for those currently battling cancer, and while you're at it, please express appreciation toward caregivers who work with these patients. For Go Red Day, if you would like to learn more about the Go Red For Women initiative through the American Heart Association, visit https://www.goredforwomen.org/en/"
The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the theme for its 2022 World Cancer Day as "Closing the Care Gap," referring to the difference in cancer treatment between high- and low-income nations, with comprehensive treatment reportedly accessible in greater than 90% of high-income countries but less than 15% of low-income countries. The rate of survival of children diagnosed with cancer is above 80% in high-income countries, and below 30% in low- and middle-income nations. Breast cancer survival five years following the diagnosis is currently over 80% in most high-income countries but just 66% in India and 40% in South Africa.
World Cancer Day was founded in 2000 by the Union for International Cancer Control.
It is a day to raise awareness, educate and push people and governments to take measures to reduce the risk of cancer for all people.
