A new law cosponsored by State Sen. Craig Wilcox (R-Woodstock) aims to assist disabled veterans requiring home modifications for accessibility. Senate Bill 2751 (Public Act 103-0621) stipulates that veterans with disabilities will not incur building permit fees for necessary improvements to their residences.

Currently, disabled veterans must pay permit fees to local governments in addition to renovation costs. "Our veterans leave their homes and families to protect homes and families across our state and our nation. When they return, disabled veterans often need to adapt or upgrade their homes because of injuries sustained during service to their country," said Wilcox, a 24-year Air Force veteran. "This new law will ease the financial burden a bit by waiving the extra costs of local government fees."

Passed unanimously by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, Senate Bill 2751 was signed into law on July 1, 2024, and will take effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
