Jury selection has commenced in the trial of former Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan, who is facing 23 charges including racketeering, bribery, and wire fraud. The charges stem from an alleged bribery scheme involving Commonwealth Edison (ComEd), the state's largest utility. Madigan, who served in the Illinois House from 1971 until his resignation in 2021, was a significant political figure in Illinois and also chaired the Democratic Party of Illinois.
In light of Madigan's trial, Senate Republicans are advocating for comprehensive ethics reforms to prevent future misconduct. They have proposed several bills aimed at increasing accountability among public officials by closing loopholes and enforcing stricter regulations.
