A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the City Of Crystal Lake Finance Department on October 25, 2024. The request was made by McHenry Times, a media organization committed to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs.
In the interest of transparency and public accountability, we at McHenry Times requested specific records related to sales tax collected from retailers since the beginning of the year. The details sought include monthly sales tax collection compared to projections, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month, and the names of each retailer along with their reported gross retail sales for each month.
As a media organization, we believe that access to public records is essential in fulfilling our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. We also believe that as media professionals engaged in disseminating information to the public, we are eligible for a fee waiver under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act.
