A Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request was sent to the Woodstock City Council on October 15, 2024. The request, made by us at McHenry Times, sought detailed information about all council members currently serving in the organization.
In our pursuit of comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we requested specific records under the Illinois Freedom of Information Act, 5 ILCS 140. The information requested included a list of all council members with details such as their names, titles, years of appointment, term lengths (2 or 4 years), and term expiry dates.
As a media organization dedicated to providing transparency to the public and holding public institutions accountable, access to such public records is essential for us to fulfill our professional responsibilities. We believe that we are eligible for a fee waiver as a media professional given our role in disseminating information.
We await a response from the Woodstock City Council and will continue to work towards ensuring transparency in local government affairs.
