Illinois lawmakers recently convened the 104th General Assembly with inauguration ceremonies on January 8, following a four-day "Lame Duck" session. During this session, House Bill 5164, known as the "Name Change Bill," was passed by the Senate and later by the House of Representatives along partisan lines.
Proponents argue that the bill facilitates an expedited and confidential name change process for non-citizens who have resided in Illinois for at least three months. Critics, however, express concerns that it allows individuals to claim eligibility without proof, potentially enabling illegal immigrants and criminals to exploit the system.
The bill also permits judges to seal name change records. Opponents believe this could create a loophole that undermines legal processes and may benefit those with malicious intent. They argue that such measures exacerbate challenges related to illegal immigration under Governor JB Pritzker’s administration.
In other developments, Senate Republicans are preparing legislation aimed at safeguarding election integrity in response to reports that voter registration forms are being sent to non-citizens by the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS). Concerns were raised about potential voter fraud due to these actions. The new legislation will require a database of non-citizens with Illinois driver's licenses to ensure only eligible citizens can vote.
Additionally, Senator Wilcox announced an employment opportunity for a traveling legislative assistant. The position involves travel to Springfield during session weeks and administrative support both there and in Woodstock when not in session.
Senator Wilcox also launched his annual "Valentines for Seniors" event in the 332nd District. Community members are encouraged to send cards and drawings for seniors by February 7, which will be delivered around Valentine's Day.
