The 104th General Assembly has convened, marking the start of a new legislative session in Illinois. Representative Steve Reick has launched his weekly newsletter, the Reick Report, to keep constituents informed about legislative activities and their impact on citizens.

Reick emphasizes that much of what affects daily life occurs in Springfield rather than Washington. The newsletter will cover topics such as pension system reforms, child welfare protection, fiscal responsibility with taxpayer money, and local events in McHenry County.

Reick invites feedback from readers, stating that "communication is a two-way street," and encourages constituents to share their thoughts or concerns.

During the inauguration ceremony for the 104th General Assembly on January 8th, Reick delivered a speech seconding House Minority Leader Tony McCombie's nomination for Speaker. He noted the autocratic nature of current governance and urged a move towards reform. The speech elicited mixed reactions.

Illinois faces significant pension debt challenges. The state owes approximately $140 billion to its five pension funds, with additional liabilities from other public pensions raising this figure substantially. Reick has long advocated for pension reform and highlighted issues with the "Tier II" pension program enacted in 2010. This program fails to meet federal "safe harbor" requirements, potentially leaving local taxpayers liable for shortfalls.

A proposed fix by House Democrats includes Senate Bill 2, which introduces several costly enhancements to existing pensions. These changes could increase accrued pension liability by nearly $60 billion and require an additional $1.132 billion annually starting in FY 2027.

Reick's district office will have new hours beginning January: open Mondays and Wednesdays from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with appointments available on other weekdays via phone or email.

Despite winter conditions in McHenry County, residents can enjoy activities like cross-country skiing and bowling. Additionally, Woodstock will host its annual Groundhog Day celebration commemorating its role as a filming location for the movie "Groundhog Day."
