The legislature is currently on a break, but work continues as numerous bills have been filed in preparation for the Governor's upcoming budget address. Meanwhile, a federal jury deliberates in Mike Madigan's corruption trial. Representative Jeff Keicher addresses homeschooling issues, committee assignments, and an upcoming tele-townhall in his latest newsletter.

Keicher has been appointed as the Republican Spokesman for several committees including Adoption & Child Welfare and Appropriations-Pensions & Personnel. He emphasizes the importance of addressing critical issues such as child welfare and pension reform while ensuring fiscal responsibility and government accountability.

A significant topic discussed by Keicher is homeschooling legislation. A bill (H.B. 2827) introduced in the Illinois House seeks to increase state oversight of homeschooling. The bill claims to protect homeschooled children from potential abuse and neglect. However, Keicher argues that this infringes on parental rights, stating it treats families with suspicion.

Keicher spoke with a co-sponsor of the bill who explained its intent to verify enrollment of homeschooled children rather than consider them truant. Despite this explanation, Keicher opposes the bill, fearing it could lead to further erosion of parental rights without addressing actual problems.

He urges constituents to oppose H.B. 2827 through an online petition and advocates for respecting individuals and families rather than imposing additional regulations.

Additionally, Keicher condemns recent acts of political violence after a brick was thrown through colleagues' office windows. He stresses that violence is unacceptable regardless of motivation.

Lastly, Representative Jeff Keicher invites constituents to join him and Representative Jeff Keicher for a tele-townhall on February 26th from 6:30-7:30 P.M., where they will discuss the Governor’s budget address among other topics.

For those interested in local events, there will be a Free Firelight Family Walk at Emricson Park on March 7th featuring an illuminated walking path and refreshments.
