State Senator Craig Wilcox | Illinois General Assembly
Republican State Senators Craig Wilcox, Jason Plummer, and Erika Harriss have expressed strong opposition to a proposed $6 billion tax increase in Illinois. The Senators argue that the tax hike would severely impact small businesses throughout the state. This proposal follows a $1 billion tax increase earlier this year aimed at supporting high state spending.
During a press conference at the Capitol, the Senators, who are also business owners in Illinois, called for a budget focused on fiscal responsibility rather than increased taxes. Senator Wilcox stated, "In Illinois, small business owners already face one of the most burdensome regulatory and tax environments in the country." He added that further tax increases could lead businesses to cut jobs or close down.
Wilcox criticized Governor JB Pritzker for reinstating the franchise tax after it was supposed to be phased out following a bipartisan agreement in 2019. "When leaders break their word to the very people who take the risks to create jobs, they send a clear message: Illinois is not a place to grow a business," said Wilcox.
As discussions continue on crafting the Fiscal Year 2026 budget, Republican Senators urge their Democratic colleagues to avoid large tax increases and work towards a balanced financial plan that considers all citizens' needs.
