A recent audit by the Illinois Auditor General has highlighted ongoing problems at the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS). The report found that 29 out of 34 issues identified were repeat findings from previous years, indicating continued management challenges under Governor J.B. Pritzker's administration.
Lawmakers have expressed concern about DCFS’s performance in handling child abuse and neglect cases, emphasizing the risks to children under its care. Two deaths—AJ Freund and more recently, 18-year-old Mackenzi Felmlee—have prompted renewed calls for reform within the agency.
“These repeated failures are unacceptable. It is well-past time to implement meaningful reforms that hold leadership accountable and better protect children in the agency’s care,” a statement read.
The full audit report is available for public review.
In legislative news, Senate Bill 2372 was signed into law this year with the goal of helping young farmers gain access to farmland in Illinois. Senator Craig Wilcox, who co-sponsored the bill, said it will establish a Farmland Transition Commission within the Illinois Department of Agriculture. The commission will study obstacles facing farmers aged 25 to 40 and suggest policy changes aimed at easing farmland transitions.
“This law brings together policymakers, agricultural leaders, and young farmers to ensure the long-term success of farming in Illinois. By improving access to farmland, the state can help preserve family farms and secure the future of agriculture,” Wilcox stated.
Applications for seats on this new commission are being accepted through the Board and Commissions website.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced a lottery for youth hunters interested in participating in a managed deer hunt this fall. The drawing will be held August 26 for spots during youth firearm deer season from October 11-13 at Jim Edgar Panther Creek State Fish and Wildlife Area (JEPC) in Cass County as well as Sangamon County State Conservation Area. To enter, applicants must mail required information by August 25; selected participants can buy permits starting August 5. All participants must meet age requirements and follow supervision rules set by state regulations.
Senator Wilcox also announced an upcoming free document shredding event scheduled for August 16 at State Representative Steve Reick’s office in Woodstock. Constituents may bring up to two banker-sized boxes for shredding; non-perishable food donations will also be collected for local pantries.
Other community events include pet adoption opportunities, informational sessions on IPASS services, Medicare education seminars, and a senior resource fair over coming weeks across various locations in District 32.
A new law supported by Senator Wilcox expands protections for individuals with disabilities living in community-based settings. House Bill 57 updates existing legislation so residents of Community Integrated Living Arrangements (CILAs) now have guaranteed rights to receive essential visitors like those living in other regulated facilities.
“This change upholds the dignity and independence of individuals with disabilities by guaranteeing equal access to the support they need, regardless of where they live,” according to supporters.
Meanwhile, Senate Republicans criticized Governor Pritzker after his remarks about redistricting during an event with Texas Democrats earlier this month. They cited his decision in 2021 to sign district maps drawn by Democratic lawmakers as evidence he has not upheld promises regarding independent redistricting efforts.
“Pritzker’s effort to weigh in on redistricting in other states while ignoring his own record reveals a clear double standard,” said Republican senators concerned about political influence over mapmaking processes within Illinois’ government structure.
Wilcox has represented Illinois’ 32nd Senate District since being elected as a Republican senator in 2018, succeeding Pamela Althoff (https://www.ilga.gov/senate/Senator.asp?GA=103&MemberID=3166).
