U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren (R-IL) has co-sponsored the Medicare Common Access Card Act of 2015, HR 3220, to upgrade the health program.
The act is designed to bring Medicare into the 21st Century by employing smart card technology to reduce fraud and modernizing how Medicare grants its reimbursements with the use of electronic confirmation for payments.
“Advancing technology in health care is critically important to improving quality, expanding access, preventing fraud and abuse and reducing costs across the Medicare program and the larger U.S. health care system," Rep. Hultgren told McHenry Times.
"Health IT is a bipartisan issue, and this bill is a perfect opportunity to work together to allow this country’s seniors access services more easily and protect Medicare beneficiaries from identity theft. Secure technology is available to us – offering it to seniors at a reduced cost to a ballooning Medicare program is a no-brainer,” he said.
The act will reportedly be of no additional cost to taxpayers.
